The SS Sardinian

We (Judy Kelley & Joyce Rorabaugh) have been researching the emigration of our common great-grandfather Arthur Tarling and family from England to Montreal Canada in 1879.  This was after the re-fit after a tragic fire for which we've found the report in the New York Times of Saturday 11th. May 1878.

SS Sardinian (1875) Allan Line

Built by Robert Steele & Co, Greenock, Scotland.  Tonnage: 4,376.  Dimensions: 400' x 42'.  Single screw, 13 1/2 knots.  Compound engines.  Three masts and one funnel.  Iron hull.  Passengers:  120 first and 850 third.  Maiden voyage: Liverpool-Quebec-Montreal, July 29, 1875.  After the tragic fire of this vessel on May 10, 1878, which cost many lives, she was salved, refitted and returned to trans-Atlantic service.  Triple expansion engines installed in 1897.  Reduced to two masts.  Served in various North Atlantic routes.  Sold to Spanish owners in 1920, and used as a hulk at Vigo.  Sister ship: Polynesian.

I (Judy) started from Arthur Tarling's "declaration of intent" to become a citizen of the USA which detailed the date of his arrival in Quebec.  Then I researched ships that matched that date and started searching through the passenger lists.  After long hours searching, on the SS Sardinian I found:

Art. Turling, Eliz., A.J., Geo, & W.F.

which is the best fit for Arthur Tarling, his wife Naomi Elizabeth (who it seems often went by her middle name Elizabeth), and their three young children Arthur John, George and William Frederick (which later got shortened to Wilfred).  It is possible that we can see these children in the Tarling indexes on this site as all born in Lambeth: Arthur John DQ 1875; George MQ 1877 and William Frederick DQ 1878.  We also have corresponding details of the family from the 1881 census in Montreal, Canada.
