2003: The LDS reference if you want to
order this is 35mm microfilm number 0994066 (see item 9).
We have now arranged that a copy of this microfilm is on indefinite loan
at the London (UK) LDS Family History Centre in South Kensington, London.
You can view it for free any time they are open (phone 020 7589 8561).
We now believe that although the LDS details clearly say R.C.R. Tarling this may be records from Richard George Rix Tarling (born 7th. August 1916), a previous archivist for the Tarling Family History Society. The coding on some of the cards, including the examples below, may well be from the index of the London Metropolitan Archives, the depository of all London Parish Registers (except for the Cities of London and Westminster). There are others that are clearly from the PRO (censuses), old directories, and the like. Examples of the first few records are also on the Tarling database contributors private website. |
[PREVIOUSLY]
Some of you web-heads may have noticed that the new Mormons site lists a manuscript: "Tarling Genealogical records 1577-1884" the author is R. C. R. Tarling and they also list a microfilm copy so we thought it only fair to give you a preview, because we have had a look...
The title may be deceptive as "Tarling Genealogical Records 1577-1884" looks to us to be photocopies of a card index of R.C.R. Tarling, relating to (presumably) just his or her ancestors in London and Essex, totalling about 68 pages, and with no original date of production. The originals were sent from London to Utah in 1985, and microfilmed the same year onto 35mm microfilm. The records take the form of about 320 card copies, all in very easily readable handwriting and labelled "Xerox Copies Throughout". There are a maximum of 5 cards to a page and the reduction ratio is quoted as 17X. There is no index, family tree charts, introduction or decoding of the reference numbers, just copies of cards. They are all in LONDON or ESSEX (or a very few in adjacent area), there seems little obvious sense in the order of the cards, except that London seems to come first followed by Essex - there is no obvious further divison by location, date, BMD etc., name or reference code, that we have noticed. We would dearly like to get these details transcribed and into the database, as we could then collate and collect into families; if anyone reading this page has an interest in this area and would be prepared to consider transcribing these records do please get in touch (see the home page for details).
The cards seem to start in London and include Islington, Clerkenwell, Greenwich, Southwark, Bermondsey, Lambeth, Deptford, Walworth, Stepney, Holborn and many more. London details include such as the marriage of Thomas Tarling to Hannah Bloor after Banns on 15th. September 1810 at St. Lukes, Old Street, Clerkenwell. Kelly's Directory (a sort of pre-phone Yellow Pages) in 1889 listed a Tarling's Ink Manufacturers at 22 St. James Walk, Clerkenwell; and the 1851 census (it says on one card) shows Emma Tarling in Chigwell, Serv U 22 House Servant born in Lambourne in Essex.
Then on to Essex, including Stifford, Woodford, Bobbingworth, Lambourne and a lot for Leyton, and of course the Epping and Ongar areas in general, and a number of other locations.
Some Tarlin, Terlynge, Tearling and Tarlinge are also included, particularly for Essex, and a few of the cards seem to be repeats (filed under two different categories perhaps?). We guess that about 60% relate to London and 40% to Essex. Most of these cards cover the 19th. Century, some the 18th. Century and a few 17th. or even 16th. Century. Our first guess would be that there are about 150 different individuals mentioned.
From the UK you can order (it may take a while) and then view the microfilm
for up to a month at your local Family History Centre (it is already at
London - see above) for about £4.00 (say $6 US), or temporarily
for a month for about £2.70 (say $4) and copy pages for 25 pence
(say 40cents) per page. A web representation of the first 3 cards
appears below.
