| How to get copies of civil records for England or Wales |
If you have not already done so, please see the Tarling Family History home page.
This page is an introduction
to getting copies ("certified copy of an entry") of civil records of births,
marriages or deaths in England or Wales from July 1837. The 3-point
plan:
1] Check all the details. Be sure you know the exact name, date and place of the event. Check FreeBMD; FreeBMD stands for Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths, and the objective is to provide free internet access to the indexes of these vital records in England and Wales since July 1837. Check this Tarling family history site, see the UK vital records page. Check your other sources. You need at least a name, date and place in order to get a copy.
NEW 2005: you can now order over the internet as well and it is less expensive.
2] Order your certificate, see the GRO website Easiest is to order online: see the Certificate Ordering Service page, and down at the bottom of that page click on "Click here to begin the process" to order your certificates online . You can also order copies by post, telephone or fax. Or you can go to the Family Records Centre in Clerkenwell (London) and order them there (but you have to wait a week or so before you can collect them or they can be posted. There is a page detailing fees, basically certificates are £11.50, or £8 with a full GRO reference or £7 over the internet with a full GRO Reference.
PLEASE NOTE GRO
References: having
the GRO reference (and ordering via the internet) can save you £4.50
per certificate - and that service currently (Feb 2005) seems not quite
as slow. However you are cautioned: DO NOT RELY ON THE REFERENCES GIVEN
ON THIS SITE. If you also find the same reference given on FreeBMD
by more than one independent indexer then it is probably
correct. If you are a database contributor and would like us to check
a Tarling reference first, please contact us with the details and we will
check the reference, but regret we cannot be held responsible for any error.
3] Send a copy
to the Tarling Database. PLEASE send a copy of any certificate
to be included in the Tarling database, see the Tarling
Database page or e-mail Kevin Tarling
