Major update: Jan 2004...
Hi - I've been an avid and successful family history hunter for a while and extended many branches of my family back a long way. I use the internet and support the new Tarling family history site, but I have not yet started my own web site so for the moment my Tarling page is kindly hosted here. My Tarling branch starts (or ends) when Linny Louisa TARLING married George Henry DAY on 16th. April 1893.
I'd be delighted to hear from anyone researching Tarling in the Bishops Cleeve and Gotherington area before about 1875 - I have a GEDCOM file of my Tarling relatives, back to James Tarling who married Elizabeth Sparkes in 1752 in Bishops Cleeve. I have gathered a lot of information on Tarling in that area and era.

Some
of my current items of interest and news (for 2004):
Wanted:
the maiden surname of Elizabeth, mother of Richard Tarling (1838) Gotherington...
Let me start with another
wonderful recent success story: I had more or less given up on finding
the baptism of Richard Tarling (born 1838, Gotherington), having been diverted
by the 'other' Richard (son of William Tarling and Sarah [nee Cox] - see
the table below). However thanks to Keith Tarling I've now found
the baptism of my Richard Tarling: 11 Aug 1839 in the adjacent village
of Bishop's Cleeve, son of James and Elizabeth Tarling. That's the good
news; and the bad news is I still can't find the maiden surname of Elizabeth
(e.g. from the marriage of Richard Tarling to Elizabeth). Any offers
please?
Julia
Eva Tarling: witness at the wedding of Linny Louisa Tarling, is her sister-in-law.
On the marriage certificate
for George Henry Day and Linny Louisa Tarling (daughter of Richard and
Harriet - see the table below) on 16th. April 1893 at Bishop's Cleeve one
of the witnesses is Julia Eva Tarling, and for a long while I tried to
work out how she was related. Well the answer is intriguing: because
she was born Julia Eva Tarling (in fact a very distant relative of my Linny
Louisa Tarling), but the twist is that she married Linny's brother William
Tarling. So she had exactly the same name, including surname, before
and after her marriage.
Relations
found via this Tarling web site... Linny Louisa
was born on 18th. May 1872 in Gotherington, Gloucestershire, to Richard
Tarling and Harriet (nee Russell) and died 7th. May 1957 in Chepstow, Monmouthshire
- her tombstone says she was aged 85.
Linny Louisa's father
Richard Tarling was born in Gotherington in about 1838 (baptized
11 Aug 1839) and married Harriet Russell on 31st. August 1872 and they
had 15 children. Now there were two Richard Tarling's born in Gotherington
in 1838 and I had long known they were first cousins as illustrated below:

However just recently I found out from
this Tarling family history web site that Paul and Bob Tarling in Canberra
are descendants of the other Richard (whose birth certificate I had previously
purchased, hoping it to be my Richard Tarling!). This illustrates
the power of web sites such as these and the value of sharing information.
So my daughter has sixth cousins in Canberra, Australia!
More
Australian cousins found - on the Tarling myfamily web site
William Tarling and
Julia Eva Tarling (nee Tarling - see above) had several children, including
Amy Eva Tarling who married William Joseph Phillips, and they and their
children emigrated to Australia in 1926 in the Group Settlement Scheme.
Their daughter Christina married George Edward Latch who has a son Ray
Latch who contacted me via E-mail. Ray has even found a couple of photos
to add to the Tarling myfamily site.
FreeBMD
I am pleased to say that I was a great
early supporter of FreeBMD and did a lot of transcription work for them
(really until work commitments meant I had to ease off). So if like
me you are impressed by the
Index of England & Wales
civil Birth, Marriage and Death records for Tarling on this, just think
how much more you would be impressed by the entire Births, Marriages and
Deaths index from the start on 1st. July 1837 to less than 100 years ago,
all available free on the internet... Well that's the aim of FreeBMD,
which is solidly underway but always needs help in transcribing etc.
This Tarling site and I have now sent in every Tarling entry (and
variations to include anyone beginning Tarl...), but if you have recorded
any items or blocks of other BMD indexes, or if you would like to transcribe
some to help please see the FreeBMD
web site.
UK
BDM exchange both contains and needs your full details of
UK births, deaths and marriages. So if you have a certificate please add
the details to Graham Pitt's site - it's very easy to add the details.
It is also the place to go if you want a free search just in case anyone
has already posted the details from a certificate you want.
