DNA Tarling surname genetic study

If you have not already done so, please see the Tarling Family History home page.

DNA

We have just started the Tarling surname genetic study. The first details appeared on the Tarling myfamily.com site to get the project underway;  and we are now widening the invitation to any man with the surname Tarling Tarlin or Terling; the full 43 marker test from DNA-Heritage will cost just US$189 (about £95) as part of this study. To get your free kit and details please see below or read on for more details...

Genetic studies for genealogy have moved on apace over the last few years. Chris Pomery's book "DNA and Family History" is excellent. Or search the web and you'll find labs offering their services and more details. There is a page with some further technical details of the Tarling surname study here.  Anyone who wants to ask any further questions is welcome to contact Stephen Tarling.

Tarling project aims

In the same way that anthropological studies investigated the 'Out-of-Africa' theory for the origin of human tribes we'd like to work on a more recent scale and examine the 'Out-of-Terling' theory:   Are all Tarling paternal lines related to one common ancestor?   (one possibility is that all Tarling families start from the Village of Terling in Essex).
Are the Essex and London Tarlings linked very recently, a longer time ago or not at all?   Is there a common ancestor for the various Gloucestershire Tarling branches?  Are Tarling and Terling surnames related recently?

These are the questions we are hoping to address.   The quality of our answers depends mainly on the number of men taking part, the number of markers we use, and on luck. So we're going to trust our luck, use plenty of markers and therefore we are out to concentrate on recruiting as many participants as possible.

Participants and supporters will get the full answers.   Anonymity will be given to any participant who wants it (wait until you see the results and then decide whether you want to make your name available).

Action plan and next steps

We are particularly interested in hearing from or about any man who can trace his paternal (birth) line through to a Tarling (or Terling, Tarlin etc.), the further back the better.   Usually this would be a man with the surname Tarling (or Terling, Tarlin...).

Anyone taking part will be able to compare with the database and find out which branch they are most closely related to - this may help those who are not sure about their Tarling family history roots.

    E
verything you need is provided in a kit which is sent to you. The process involves just wiping a cotton bud round the inside of your mouth (long after you have eaten) and popping it into the post.   That's it.
Out of Terling

After an initial pilot we have selected DNA-Heritage as our preferred provider - although we are also delighted to work with results from Family Tree DNA.

For a free kit and further details:

To get your free kit and instructions and further details please either contact Stephen Tarling with your name and postal address (to send the kit) OR go to
http://www.dnaheritage.com/oracle/join.asp?GroupUnique=612853142&Surname=Tarling
and sign yourself up.
To do it yourself, basically you scroll down the page linked above and click on the button marked "Use these markers" just above where it says 'The full 43-marker test is just $189'. Then fill in your details on the next page carefully (you heard about DNA Heritage from 'Our Surname Group'), and then click on submit.  There is nothing to pay at this stage and no credit card details are needed at this stage.  They send you a free swab kit and instructions and I'll send you more details.  If you then want to go ahead you send off the samples to them and when they have your results ready they will then invoice you.  When you get the results let me know and I'll compare them.

If you know of any man who can trace his paternal line back through a Tarling (or Terling, Tarlin etc.)  please contact Stephen Tarling.
