Tarling Civil Records England & Wales: an introduction

If you have not already done so, please see the Tarling Family History home page.

This page is an introduction to the Tarling Civil Records files of births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales which begin in July 1837. People who have used or seen these records and indexes probably do not need to read this page, but note that we also provide a list of 19th. Century Registration Districts found in these files with the county and adjacent districts.  Details of baptisms, marriages and burials before 1st. July 1837 are available in the the Tarling database and on the LDS familysearch on-line. More recent details than are found here are also included in the Tarling Database.

The search pages are large but compressed files of the barest details (name, date and place) designed to help you if you are searching. The temporary information pages are now archive (there is now far too much information to put on these web pages so the database has taken over).

SEARCH PAGES

On this web site we have added pre-formatted lists of the index for all Tarling entries of births, marriages and deaths from the civil records for England and Wales, starting from 1st. July 1837.  These files are taken from information in the Tarling database and are still occasionally updated as corrections are found. The main resource on-line is the pre-formatted pages (for shorter file sizes, for quicker download), being the index files for:

Births (for all Tarl... entries from July 1837 to December 1899 size 86KB. Details for Tarling from January 1900 to December 1999 are also available on the Tarling database)
Marriages  (for all Tarl... entries from July 1837 to December 1911, size 52KB. Details for Tarling from January 1912 to December 1999 are also available on the Tarling database)
Marriage Partners a list of any partners of Tarling (only) we know between July 1837 and December 1911 (April 2001: 100 out of about 700 so far).  the surname of every Tarling marriage partner from 1912 to 1977 is in the Tarling database as are about 125 of these Tarling marriage partners at Oct 2001
Deaths (all Tarl... entries from July 1837 to Dec 1899 and all Tarling entries from January 1900 to December 1924, size 74KB.  Age at death appears in the index from 1866 onwards. Details for Tarling from January 1925 to December 1999 are also available on the Tarling database).

Some of the original indexes are old hand-written ledgers - we've interpreted the writing as well as we can, please let us know if you can improve anything.

A guide to the columns:

Age (in death indexes only from 1866 onwards)
Note that this is just the age as reported by whoever registered the death (so sometimes that may have been a guess or based on perhaps the recollection of a distant or distraught relative or a neighbour- treat with some scepticism).

Q = Quarter of the year during which the recorded event is registered:
M = March Quarter: the event (probably) occurred between about December of the PREVIOUS year and March of the quoted year (inclusive).
J = June Quarter: the event (probably) occurred between March and June (inclusive) of the quoted year.
S = September Quarter: the event (probably) occurred between June and September (inclusive) of the quoted year.
D = December Quarter: the event (probably) occurred between September and December (inclusive) of the quoted year.

District
This is the district where the event was registered, usually also the district that it occurred, but sometimes adjacent and occasionally a more distant place for a birth or death (when there is a month or more after the event during which it must be registered).  Many of the names of these districts are NOT those of modern towns and may be difficult to find on a modern atlas, or there may be more than one place with that name.  Even people who have lived and worked around England and Wales all their life don't know these places, some of which are names based on old Parishes etc. so we have produced a list of the Registration Districts found in these Tarling files, with the county and a note of adjacent districts.

ARCHIVE TEMPORARY INFORMATION PAGES

PLEASE NOTE, from 2000: all these 10-years files are now archive material only - there is now far too much data to go on this web site and not enough volunteer power to prepare all the files; so all definitive, updated and new data is now stored in the Tarling Database, and these 10-year index files are now archive material which we do not maintain or update.

This takes you to an index of all the ten-year pages for births, marriages and deaths, which may contain more details for an entry you have found.

As well as the information above they may contain:

Volume
The volume number can also act as a first guide to the area in question, but the numbering changed at the start of 1852.  Fortunately there is no confusion because all the later volume numbers have letter suffixes.  NOTE: there is no difference between capitals and lower case for these suffixes: 1B is exactly the same as 1b etc.  Some are in Roman numerals - this often indicates that the index volume is still an old hand-written volume. The little table below gives you an initial indication of the area:

Volume numbers 1837 to 1851
Volume numbers 1852 to 1945
1, I Greater London 1a Greater London (mostly western areas)

Page
There is little to be derived from this except for a couple of small points.  For marriages BOTH parties must obviously have the same full reference, including the volume and page number.  Twins' births will usually have the same or adjacent page numbers (and conversely two children born in the same district, in the same quarter, but with page numbers that differ by more than one are probably not twins - and therefore from different parents).

Notes, annotations etc.
Ref. N: these are where someone has far more details about this entry: note the number and see the References page for more details.
Cross-references to births, marriages (= is the name of the person they married), deaths, wills or administration etc. should all be obvious.
? indicates that either the writing in the index is not clear, but that is our best guess OR that we are not sure of the detail we have added in the notes.
?? indicates that there is something badly wrong, missing or suspicious (and it is on our list to check).

HELP AVAILABLE and WANTED:

HOW TO GET A COPY OF A CIVIL RECORD FOR ENGLAND OR WALES

And just a brief recommendation for an extremely useful resources for U.K. births, marriages and deaths (and a request for help):

FreeBMD.  The FreeBMD stands for Free Births, Marriages, and Deaths, and the objective is to provide free internet access to the indexes of births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales since 1837.  As we complete and check our Tarling records we are also submitting them to FreeBMD, we have already submitted every Tarling and are adding marriage partners as we find them.  FreeBMD is a volunteer task so if you can help by transcribing (for instance for a name other than Tarling) please take a look at their web site.
