Upper Norwood is watching you...

Telecom Tower
Our Neighbourhood Watch is in Upper Norwood - the prow of the first ridge of Glacial Gravel south of the London Clay bowl. The 85m contour goes through the middle of our watch, giving some people stunning views, especially over London to the north and parts of the Thames Valley to the west.  One of our local residents, Mrs. Vallotton who has the best views over London kindly invited us up on a bitterly cold but fairly clear November day to take a look around, and this page shows some of the results.

The Millennium Wheel
Under construction 6th. November 1999. This photo taken from over 6 miles away, from a direction close to due south from the wheel. On the far left is the very edge of the Houses of Parliament clock tower known as Big Ben, to the right is the Shell Building at Waterloo. The trees in the foreground are part of Brockwell Park. Slightly to the left of the wheel you can just see Alexandra Palace - a staggering 11.6 miles away
And so we can also see our North London friends of the Hillfield Park Neighbourhood Watch, in the photo about they are about 4 pixels left of Ally Pally at the top of Muswell Hill.  We waved to Betty Ward, Peter Thompson and friends...

20 photos stitched together, from Hyde Park in the west to beyond the Millennium Dome in the east.  Be sure to pan all the way across. Click on the photo or here for a larger 230KB version which is still just 5000 pixels wide (selected and reduced from an original 30000 pixel wide collage - a 4MB JPG).

The originals are sharper and larger than these extracts, but we have reduced and compressed them here so that you don't have to wait too long while they download. Finally three more views of familiar London landmarks.

Technical notes Equipment: Sony Mavica FD7 digital still camera (with the equivalent of a 40 to 400mm zoom lens on a 35mm camera, but note that the clearness of the air and not the focal length of your lens is the main problem);  Velbon Tripod;  Minolta Binoculars; Warm underwear. Height above sea level: 104.8m.  Location: latitude 51:25:24N longitude 00:06:43W, O.S. grid reference 531267, 171143. Temperature of fingers: a few degrees above freezing.

Thanks again to Mrs. Vallotton who kindly invited us and provided us the guided tour of the horizon across London.  Also thanks are due to P.C. Roland Rattray from Gipsy Hill Police Station for the introduction (and our support to him in clearing the adjacent area of cars illegally for sale and blocking the road).
