The 1998 Garden Party (thanks to Mrs. France: in the middle, above left)

Chief Super. And who is this in the shirt of a lumberjack on his day off? Someone seen lurking around the local nick perhaps? Someone who has appeared on the cover of a glossy magazine recently? And who is this he is talking to (on the left of this photo)? The ex-mayor of an adjacent borough no less.

From the official press release: "On Sunday, 7th. June Saint Joseph's Neighbourhood Watch, Upper Norwood, held their annual Garden Party in the very encouraging presence of The Mayor and Mayoress of Croydon (Councillor and Mrs. Patrick Ryan). Our Chief-Coordinator, Hugh Norwood Collins, welcomed everyone, including over one hundred guests to the spacious and delightful home of Mr. and Mrs. France in Crown Lane. He particularly welcomed the Mayor and Mayoress; Mrs. Sue Yoxall, M.B.E., Chief Executive of the National Neighbourhood Watch Association; Mrs. Anne Viney, Assistant Director of Victim Support; Mr. Harold Lockwood, J.P., formerly Chief Magistrate of South London and Mrs. Lockwood; and Chief Superintendent and Mrs. Collins, as well as other guests."

And here are a few of our members including Mrs. Anne Viney (the Assistant Director of Victim Support).

From the official press release: "After the arrival of the Mayoral party a copious and delicious luncheon was served and greatly enjoyed by all present. The children all behaved beautifully and had their photograph taken with the Mayor and Mayoress, whose (British) Rolls Royce they has already admired. Fortunately the sun appeared and made the day"

And a few more faces, our neighbour on the left with the empty plate and empty glass is surely heading for a refill... And our good friend on the right seems to have cheered up the Mayor.

From the official press release: "In his address of thanks, the Mayor asked all members to do all in thier power to further the cause of Neighbourhood Watch which, he said, had done much to make the area a safer place to live in. He also asked members to support Hugh Norwood Collins, who founded the Watch in November, 1994. He thanked us for inviting him and especially Mrs. France, for being our hostess."

Add a caption competition:

Answers on a postcard (or maybe answers in a sealed brown envelope or by anonymous FTP perhaps)... What is the Mayor saying?

From the official press release: "Sadly, W.P.C. Laraine Burnett, Hugh's co-founder was unable to be present, owing to a prior engagement. However it was a really delightful occasion which was enjoyed by everyone present and remains a happy memory"

And finally, here (on the left) is the photograph from the official press release.
