The 1999 Garden Party (thanks to Mrs. Ann France: above left)

Again the weather was wonderful (heavy overnight rain which washed
away some pollution and pollen gave way to a bright warm day with fresh
late-spring air).
Previously we have welcomed to our garden party Chief Superintendent Terry Collins as the head of South Norwood Police. However now the reorganization into larger areas brings us into a massive Croydon-wide area we were delighted to invite the newly appointed most senior police commander of Croydon. Step forward the very same and recently promoted Chief Superintendent Terry Collins. As we have observed before if you want to get on in the Metropolitan Police be sure to become associated with Saint Joseph's Neighbourhood Watch - promotion seems assured: many of our previous beat officers, sergeants and inspectors have all been promoted... |

The Chief Superintendent said a few words, highlighting
his pleasure at the 13% fall in crime across Croydon and emphasizing that
he observed that particularly low crime-rates seem to be associated with
active Neighbourhood Watch schemes. He was pleased to present the recent
annual Croydon police report, although he was not seen signing copies later..
Our chief co-ordinator Hugh Norwood Collins (no relation) thanked him and also thanked our host Mrs. Ann France for once again providing us with such a splendid venue. |
| Both new friends and old friends were much in evidence: on the immediate
right Inspector Mark Stockford, the new head of our local station at Norbury
is seen discussing local policing with our Councillor Pat Ryan (ex-Mayor
of Croydon).
On the far right the ever-popular friend of SJNW: Laraine Burnett who was the co-founder of this Neighbourhood Watch back in the days when she was our beat officer. |

| A wonderful venue, complete with swimming pool which was enjoyed by many of the young, as well as by Charlie, above right who spent almost the entire afternoon running around, but remained very well behaved most of the time... | |||

| For those of you that thought Ascot and Major-minor's wedding were the events of the season so far we are pleased to report that once again we lead the way in fashions: demure soft floppy sun-hats would be the order of the day for the MCC cricket squad if they could only find anyone of a suitable standard to play against. Bibs are being worn with sticky-finger marks (some fashions are so enduring), and poolside accessories include those extra-comfortable size shoes. | ||||

| And at the end of the day there comes a time when having run around for hours and then committed the crime of stealing the inflatable arm-band from a 6 year old under the nose of half of the local constabulary you just have to rest up at the bottom of the garden and wait for the ignominious arrest... |
