Notes:
There were at least two children older than Percy who died as infants; believed James and Rose.
Percy: I believe that Percy possibly went to the Dardanelles in WW1 and then perhaps later to Palestine where he died and was buried 'at the foot of the Mount of Olives'. There is a P. Walsh as a witness to the marriage of Rosina Walsh in 1910 so I guess this might be the same person. I have searched every P. Walsh whose death is in the CWGC register in WW1 and the most likely entry is for P. Walsh, Rifleman 552560 2nd/16th Bn., London Regt (Queen's Westminster Rifles) died 28 Dec 1917, buried Jerusalem War Cemetery (which is at the north end of the Mount of Olives), reference Y. 46. I have checked for a Percy Walsh in all burnt and unburnt series Great War records in the PRO Kew and I don't think he is there.
The bombing and CWGC details: The family were bombed by a direct hit on their house at 126 Kingston Avenue, North Cheam on 30 Sep 1940. May died and is recorded in the CWGC register as May Walsh age 39 (so born 01 Oct 1900 to 30 Sep 1901 and had not married). James (senior) was very badly injured and died the same day and is recorded in the CWGC register as age 81 at the time (so born 01 Oct 1858 to 30 Sep 1859, and his marriage certificate implies he was born 15 Aug 1858 to 14 Aug 1859). Madeline Ruddell (nee Walsh) also died and is registered as age 49 (so born 01 Oct 1890 to 30 Sep 1891). Rosina was away, staying with Maria Anthonette Sanders (nee de Smit), but Rosina's husband William Henry Whitlock was also injured.
1881 census: Fletcher: RG11/649/54/4 20 Henley Street, Battersea: Lucy Fletcher, age 19, Tailoress born Pimlico, Lucy L. Fletcher age 11m, James Fletcher, Head, age 49, a Mill Sawyer born Westminster (plus Lucy's half brother, three step-siblings and her stepmother Caroline). Is the Lucy L. Fletcher the Lillian Walsh (who was 10 in 1891 and 20 in 1901 - see below).
1881 census Walsh: not sure: could it be RG11/111/34/62 James N. Walsh, age 19 Carter, born Westminster with his mother C. Walsh, age 55, widow, shirt maker born Ireland? Update Jul 2004: Monica Chiles thinks it might be James Walsh aged 20yrs born St Georges with an address of 21, Orange Street, Southwark - parents James from Cork and Mary from Limerick, and a sister Mary Ann 10 yrs b St Saviours; and is chasing that possibility...
1891 census: RG12/422 St. Saviours Battersea at 1 Oulton Street: James Walsh, 30, Laundryman born Westminster and his wife Lucy, 29, born Holborn and their children Lillian, 10; Rosina, 4; Percy, 2; and Madeline 5 months, all born Battersea.
1901 census: RG13/442/37/11 at 20
Kennard Street: James Walsh, 40, Laundry Engineer and his wife Lucy, 39
and their children: Lillian, 20, laundress; Rosina, 14, laundress; Percy,
12; Maudiline, 10; James Robert, 7; Francis Lennard,
4 and May,1 (all given as born Battersea - but so were most people
on that page!).
