William Ball
Metropolitan Police Sergeant in the 1851 census, Marylebone area?

Introduction

I'm searching for the baptism of Lydia Ball, probably born around 1818 / 1819 in either Marylebone or Westminster; father William.  See this page which covers all the details

On her marriage certificate on 08 Oct 1849 at AEnon Baptist Chapel in Church Street, Marylebone, it says that her father William Ball was a Serjiant of Police, and gives her address as 17 Bridport Street (and the groom's address as 18 Princes Street, the same street where her daughter was born a year later and the same street that the family are in in the 1851 census)

In the PRO records we find: William Ball in the Metropolitan Police: number 24833, joined 11 Oct 1847 resigned 15 Jan 1854, and given a gratuity (and he was recommended by Mr. Thomas Brown of 29 Munster Street, Regent's Park, which is close by Marylebone).

So William Ball surely should be in the 1851 census as a Metropolitan Police Sergeant.  I feel he would have been recorded in the census if that was his occupation, and I might find his wife's forename (and hence perhaps work out which is his marriage)   There are a number of surname indexes to the 1851 census, particularly covering this area so it sounded to be a possibility...

William was not in Bridport Street (the address his daughter gave at her marriage in 1849)  in the 1851 census. Film HO 107 1490 contains Bridport Street and I checked the whole of that street carefully.  If Lydia was born about 1818 it seems likely that her father was at least 50 in 1851, probably nearer 60.

So searching 1851 census films (in order or their proximity to Bridport Street, but then re-ordering them into numerical order for ease of checking):
