Introduction
I thought I'd put this page here so that you can find out about me before
(or after) you talk to me. I'd appreciate any tips and hints, suggestions
or thoughts (or sympathy!). These are links to my home
page at work and the
index of my sites at home and the
Tarling family history site.
SCIENCE:
RESEARCH and TEACHING At work at Birkbeck
College (of London University) my interests are in Crystallography
(Atomic Structure of Materials, Physics / Chemistry / Analysis), particularly
X-Ray Powder Diffraction (an area in which I have been used as an expert
witness in pharmaceutical patent cases in various parts of the world).
I actively support the world body the International
Centre for Diffraction Data and lecture on Pharmaceutical
Powder X-Ray Diffraction. I have also carried out some analysis work
on archaeological conservation items working with Conservation
and Technical Services.
ADMIN
My administrative interests include Birkbeck
College Academic Staff Development web site and the Universities' equivalent
of Ofsted inspections, Subject
Review (previously TQA) - my department is due to be visited in February
2000 (if you have any experiences or are in the same round I would be delighted
to hear from you). I also work on space resources and buildings and works
liaison.
NATURE
I am fond of the natural world from local sites like the excellent moorhen
to places I have visited such as the Ding
Darling Wildlife Society or Majestic
Excursions in the Florida Everglades. I keep a garden watch on birds
and other animals and take a few photos. I've taken some photos
of a fox and the cormorants I see on the Thames opposite the Houses
of Parliament and will post these and other London wildlife glimpses to
my forthcoming "Knotmoor Hen" pages.
FAMILY
HISTORY I have recently become involved in the Tarling
Family History pages. I've also traced others branches of my
family history including my
family history in The Netherlands.
TRAVEL
I can speak a little Dutch and even less French. I have visited The
Netherlands (extensively around Vlissingen and Zeeland), and a fair
bit of the rest of Western Europe (favourites include Copenhagen,
Barcelona, Munich, Venice, Belgrade, Salzburg, Toulouse, Brugges etc. etc.),
Japan
(Tokyo area), China (Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzjou),
USA (Manhattan
very often, the Florida Everglades, Sanibel
and Marco Island
area
a few times, and also St. Louis, Washington DC, Elizabeth City NC, Philadelphia
etc.), Egypt (Luxor and Cairo),
Israel (Eilat),
Jordan
(Petra), and I would be delighted to hear from anyone with connections
to any of these places.
CYCLING
I
cycle to and from work and have an interest in many cycling items, including
the cycle shop that I produce a web site for: Apex
Cycles.
FOOD
& WINE best summarised at the site of my favourite
London French Delicatessen Le
Tour de France.
LOCALLY
I'm
webmaster for my local Saint Joseph's Neighbourhood
Watch (see our new
Millennium views across London) and have put up some unofficial
pages for Norwood Grove. My cat Sooty
Sootington has a web site, as do the cats at Orchard
Cottage Riding Stables.
CONTACT
ME: My e-mail address
at work is s.tarling@bbk.ac.uk
and at home sicq@vino.demon.co.uk
My fax number is + 44 870 056 1171 (from the UK: 0870 056 1171).
ICQ: My
number is 4501183
but I do not often get a chance to
log on to ICQ. Thanks to Bob
in Brisbane (Oz) for all his help here, we used to chat quite often, but
I just don't get the chance nowadays.
NetMeeting: I use
NetMeeting 2.1 (but rarely get good sound quality and the chat and whiteboard
often hang), I'm rarely logged on, but please feel free to e-mail me to
arrange a meet.
Freetel: I've got the freetel
software which has slightly better sound quality than NetMeeting and
I'm always willing to give that a try. I've tried Netscape
Cooltalk and Conference but never really got either working well.
Alternatively fax me for free (or
send a fax to anyone else for free - very good if you want to contact someone
who has a fax machine, but no e-mail and lives an expensive telephone call
away, within the areas covered).
WORK
At
work I am using a cheap 133MHz Pentium Pars computer with 32MB of
memory. I link to the net via the University's direct connection (better
than T1 but shared with vermin, pardon me, postgraduate students), with
a sound card and cheap speakers (with full duplex, but that is not usually
worth trying). I use Windows 95, Netscape Communicator 4.7 (and check compatibility
with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3).
PLAY
I
am sometimes around at home in the evenings or at the weekend, especially
Saturday.
At
home I am using a decent Dell
200MHz Pentium computer but linking to the net only via a 33,600kbs modem
through Demon Internet, with a better
sound card and 32MB of memory. However for speech via the Net I have only
experienced poor sound quality. I use Windows NT4 (Service Pack 3 now),
Netscape Communicator 4.7 (and check compatibility with Microsoft Internet
Explorer 3.0).
STUPID
I am ignorant of protocols, etiquette, conventions, abbreviations and software
for the internet, however I am a mature sentient human being and willing
to learn.
NO
I am NOT in the slightest bit interested in football,
Star Trek etc., stamp collecting, computer games, anyone with an emotional
or intellectual age less than their shoe size, train-spotting or anyone
with shoes larger than size 16; and I live my sex life in the real world
thank you.
And if you think I'm sad, what about the
otherwho
have visited this page...
