| We are pleased to announce the re-formation of the Friends of Norwood Grove. Local resident Tricia Whyte was inspired to revive this once-active group as a means of providing a voice for users of the park, particularly when dealing with Croydon Council and their proposed Heritage Lottery bid for the park. Following a hugely successful recruitment day at the Grove, in which nearly 100 people joined, a committee has now been elected to represent the views of those who treasure this local amenity. The inaugural committee meeting took place on 22nd November 2005 and Dr Mark Gilmartin was elected Chair. The stated aim of the committee is as follows: "To promote and encourage the use of Norwood Grove, and to increase public awareness of its historical and ecological significance. To monitor and advise on any proposed developments, changes, preservation or conservation work to Norwood Grove." Over the coming months, the Friends of Norwood Grove will be active in canvassing opinion from the community on the proposed Heritage Lottery Fund application, and meeting with Croydon Council to relay these views. We will also be organising social events, looking into ways of increasing the use of the park by all areas of the community, and providing information on the park's historical importance to the team preparing the Heritage Lottery Fund bid. The Friends of Norwood Grove were represented at an Exhibition Day held in the Music Room of the Norwood Grove White House on Saturday 10th December, at which Croydon Council unveiled their proposals for the park. The Friends distributed a questionnaire to gauge opinion on these proposals. Membership of the Friends of Norwood Grove is £5, for further details see the link below. |
